What the term means
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a marketing label for making content useful in answer-oriented search experiences. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is often used for AI-generated answers. Definitions vary. Neither is a guarantee that a platform will mention your brand or link to your page.
Start with the same fundamentals
Google says its ordinary SEO fundamentals continue to apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional special optimization required. Keep pages crawlable and useful, publish accurate information, and make important content available as text. Do not sell a special file or schema as a universal AI-ranking shortcut.
Structure answers for a real reader
Use a direct answer followed by conditions, examples, evidence, and a relevant next step. Explain who the advice applies to and where it does not. Keep organization, author, product, and service facts consistent across your owned pages. Link to sources readers can verify.
Build credible evidence
Useful original explanations, demonstrations, research, and independently earned references may help people assess your expertise. Do not invent reviews, citations, awards, or third-party mentions. Update claims when the underlying product or evidence changes.
Measure carefully
Keep a small, repeatable set of customer questions for manual observation across the platforms you care about. Record date, engine, prompt, and whether the brand or source appeared. Treat that sample as directional; answers vary. Separately track attributable referral visits and qualified actions. Google includes AI-feature traffic in its overall Web reporting in Search Console; do not label all organic traffic AEO traffic.
